“I’m Falling” and “16 Years” from Robyn Hitchcock‘s Goodnight Oslo are slowly climbing the most-played list on my iTunes. I have a thing for music that idolizes excess, and Goodnight Oslo has some really good, remorseful tracks of that nature. But as I wrote in my pick, it’s not a gloomy album: “Airy backup vocals, reverb-laden guitars, and uptempo bridges effectively counterbalance Hitchcock’s darkly surreal lyrics.” (Though I conceded that “concertgoers can expect to occasionally dip into the doldrums when he breaks out in monologue between songs.)
Read the full pick here, which includes a video interview of Hitchcock talking about the evolution of the Venus 3 and his participation in Rachel Getting Married.
HITCHCOCK AND VENUS 3 PERFORM AT 8 P.M. AT THE BLACK CAT, 1811 14TH ST. NW. $20. (202) 667-4490.
