A Fairfax Circuit Court judge today denied an appeal to release Cara Cottle on bond after it was denied at an arraignment yesterday. Cottle was charged earlier this week with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend Dirk Smiler, the charismatic fixture of Washington’s goth scene who died of a gunshot wound to the head in his Annandale home in February.
Cottle, who is being represented by the prominent defense attorney Peter D. Greenspun, will be tried in the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court because she and Smiler lived together. A preliminary hearing is set for May 3.
At today’s hearing, Greenspun argued that the gun may have gone of accidently, the Washington Post reports this afternoon.
