There are ways, it turns out, to travel to ancient South America without owning a time machine. The “MAKIYKUMANTA-Peru: Arts and Cultural Legacy Festival” is a weeklong celebration of traditional Peruvian culture. It includes a variety of activities for time travelers of all ages.

Learn how to dance from Inca Son, take a ceramics class with Virgilio Ore, a tapestry workshop with Maximo Laura, or get a gourd-carving lesson from Delia Poma. There will also be lectures and movies, if you’d rather just sit down and be entertained without being required to do something

No cultural celebration is complete without a bazaar, and MAKIYKUMANTA-Peru is no exception. Visitors will be able to pick up wood and stone carvings, silver jewelry, paintings, textiles, and ceramics. Time machines will not be for sale at the event.

The festival opens Tuesday, July 13 and runs through Sunday, July 18 at the National Museum of the American Indian, 4th St. & Independence Ave. SW. Free. (202) 633-1000.
