Finally feels a bit more like fall outside today. Escape the rain the next few days with these free and low-cost events, which I’ve highlighted from my site Free in DC.
Monday
Attend a free discussion on how to “Transition into Fall with the Power of Meditation” hosted by Science of Spirituality DC tonight at 6:30 p.m. at MLK Library at 9th & G NW in Chinatown.
BloomBars, at 11th & Kenyon NW in Columbia Heights, hosts two poetry-related events tonight. First, it’s the monthly one hour Poet-Tree writing workshop with Gowri K. at 6:30 p.m., and then “The Garden” open mic night at 8:30 p.m. featuring Fallen Kings. Both events are all ages and by donation.
Check out some live music at the indie songwriter showcase DISS-N over at Dhalak near 18th & Florida NW. Catch local acts like the Ash Lovelies and Flo Anito at 8 p.m.
Tuesday
It’s round two of the Beltway Poetry Slam at The Fridge, located at 516 8th St. SE in Capitol Hill. Tonight’s event features international poetry slam champion and D.C. resident Sonya Renee. Slammer sign up begins at 7:30 p.m., show at 8. $5 cover.
The Friday Morning Music Club performs a free chamber music concert at Dumbarton House at 27th & Q St, NW at 7:30 p.m. The concert includes works by Bach on guitar and violoncello and a string quartet performing Haydn.
Enjoy an eco-conscious evening at Greater Goods, at 16th & U NW, with the Sustainable Business Network of Washington. In addition to happy hour staples like drinks and snacks, the “Sustainability Hour”, which starts at 6 p.m., will offer an opportunity to meet individuals from businesses, non-profits, and government agencies who are committed to promoting sustainable practices.
Wednesday
Check out the opening reception for the new show at Busboys & Poets 5th and K, “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing,” inspired by Alice Walker’s eponymous new book. Mingle with the artists and curators over food and drinks from 6 to 8 p.m.
Milwaukee-based alt-country band Union Pulse performs a free show at Baked and Wired in Georgetown from 7 to 10 p.m.
Local physical theater company Synetic offers a one night only pay-what-you-can performance of King Arthur, at their water stage in Crystal City. Bring a poncho if you plan to sit in the front two rows, or buy one at the door. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m., show starts at 8.
