Butch Warren has a companion in the One Less Gig Department—-another bassist-bandleader, at that. Kevin Pace reports that his quintet has been cut loose from its Friday night stand at POV, the rooftop terrace lounge at the W Hotel near the White House.
“We got canned for a DJ,” says Pace. “It seems that two DJs on Friday night were not enough.”
Pace, a bassist and composer with a fierce-swinging, classic bebop style, now finds his quintet—-with trumpeter Joe Herrera, saxophonist Bobby Muncy, pianist Gene D’Andrea, and drummer Andrew Hare—-without any bandstand at all. While they search for a residence, however, he does maintain a Sunday brunch gig at Chef Geoff’s downtown with his trio (himself, Herrera, and guitarist Rodney Richardson), and works in Muncy’s quartet at U-Topia on Wednesday nights. Still, the Kevin Pace Quintet deserves a spot on the DC scene.
