The Best of Friday:
Screen Vinyl Image is everything you want to listen to right now. The duo’s new “Ice Station” 7-inch is awash in heady synths, notes of somber melancholy, and pyschy guitar that hints at their wintry Alcian Blue roots. With Counterfeit I, and Phonic Riot. 10 p.m. show. $8. Velvet Lounge.
It’s taken Modern Skirts a few years to find their legs. The redneck outfit crept onto the Athens scene with 2005’s Catalogue of Generous Men, a pleasant enough piano-pop debut that drew lots of comparisons to Ben Folds. Yeah, the Skirts weren’t too crazy about that association, either. Highly finessed tunes meant for earbud listening have been replaced by home-mixed, doubled-up vocals (“Rebecca St. Claire”) on this year’s EP, Happy 81. See them at the Iota Club with Deleted Scenes. 9 p.m. show. $12.
Canyon. Vandaveer. The Deadmen. John Bustine. Brandon Butler. 9 p.m. $12. Black Cat.
Also Saturday: Colombian artists Alejo Aponte and LaTonera describe their collaborative Gente as “a cinematic record that tells the story of a man who wanders through the world discovering new roads, sounds, and faces.” Ehh, I’d substitute “man” for the newest Amazonian find, the Caquetá titi monkey. Gente has a documentary-soundtrack feel, like it should be IMAX-ed out, playing alongside a 50-foot-tall 3-D Caquetá titi who’s trekking dangerous savannas in search of new turf. No monkeys, no surround sound, just the band along with Elikeh at The Red Palace. 10 p.m. show. $15.
