The Washington Post may be without a chief art critic at the moment, but there was plenty of art criticism in yesterday’s paper: The paper’s Philip Kennicott on Canaletto at the National Gallery; freelancer (and City paper contributor) Kriston Capps on portraitist George Condo and his unlikely patron/muse, Kanye West, on the occasion of the former’s New Museum show in New York; and freelancer Jason Edward Kaufman on two works by the Dutch Master Hendrick ter Brugghen at the National Gallery. Also: More Post ink for the National Gallery in this Jacqueline Trescott piece on Mark Leithauser, the museum’s chief of design. Of interest to indie-rock fans, and not mentioned in the article: Mark Leithauser is the father of Hamilton Leithauser, the frontman of The Walkmen.
There’s not nearly enough contempt in this WaPo piece on D.C.’s Art Soiree parties, “a D.C. re-imagining of an edgy Brooklyn studio party, but less bearded and hip and more flatironed and clubby.”
The Wammies, the annual awards ceremony of the Washington Area Music Association, were last night! Although I missed them. If they’re interesting, we’ll post the results once they’re available.
