Dance world titan Bill T. Jones is showing “Fondly Do We Hope…Fervently Do We Pray,” his ambitious evening-length piece about the life of Abraham Lincoln, at the Kennedy Center tonight.

The piece, which was commissioned by Illinois’ Ravinia Festival two years ago on the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, hasn’t gotten the most stellar reviews. Watchers have said it’s all over the place, that there’s too much in there about Jones’ personal story, and that the dancing winds up being almost secondary to elements like video and text.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing. Jones is a towering and incredibly talented figure in the history of modern dance, and he’s got one hell of a company. So secondary or not, there should be some pretty amazing dancing to take in.

And there’s some good news: The show seemed virtually sold out as of a week ago, but the Kennedy Center has made some adjustments for an unusually shaped set, and was recently able to free some seats up. And glory of glories, they’re on the cheaper side.

The show is tonight and tomorrow night at 8pm. $25.
