In WaPo, Kriston Capps, co-author—along with Louis Jacobson—of this week’s Arts Desk feature on the closing of Bethesda’s Fraser Gallery—profiles Paul Reed, the last living member of the Washington Color School. The 92-year-old is still creating gorgeous, hyper-saturated works. I hope I’m that productive if I make it to that age.
You’ve probably already read about the poor reception of the month-old, $65 million Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Now, director Julie Taymor, who also helmed the Broadway smash hit musical The Lion King, is being pushed aside. According to the New York Times, composers Bono and the Edge and producers confronted her last night, asking her to step away from day-to-day duties because she refused to make changes they sought to the script.
When I was about nine years old, I loved Clarissa Explains it All. I haven’t watched the show for around 20 years, but I just may have to soon. In a programming block called “The ’90s Are All That,” TeenNick will air Clarissa, along with Rugrats, Kenan & Kel, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, The Amanda Bynes Show, and All That. Now if they could just bring back Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, and Welcome Freshman, we’d be in business.
And in news that really doesn’t have anything to do with arts, but is huge nonetheless, the Dalai Lama announced in a speech today that he’s stepping down.
