In my December cover story on the electronic dance music microgenre Moombahton, I mentioned a couple sure signs that the sound—-invented by D.C.’s Dave Nada—-may have a big future. One of them was an upcoming compilation on the influential Mad Decent label. Now the release has a cover (NSFW?), street date, and tracklist.
Blow Your Head Vol. 2: Dave Nada Presents Moombahton is the sequel to Mad Decent’s well-reviewed compilation of dubstep tracks from last year, and it comes out on May 31. A few local names turn up on the tracklist, including Nada’s duo Nadastrom (now based in L.A.), U Street Music Hall co-owner Tittsworth, and electro-pop mystery Alvin Risk. And there are appearances by some of the microgenre’s champions, like Holland’s Munchi and New York’s Sabo. Leading off the release is a track from Dylan Francis and Moombahton’s biggest benefactor, Mad Decent honcho Diplo.
A lot of the Moombahton edits out there—-mostly by producers I’ve never heard of—-can be pretty gimmicky, and it’s something Nada is conscious of. “Fishing through Soundcloud, like any genre, there’s a lot of busted tracks,” he told me last year. Can’t argue with more mid-tempo bliss to soundtrack the summer, but it’ll be interesting to see Moombahton evaluated, pretty much for the first time, by professional music critics. It’s got lots of fans in the blogosphere, and at least one supporter in academia. Certainly, look for a review in Washington City Paper.
