Beautiful Girls: Follies! The Stephen Sondheim musical opens on Saturday at the Kennedy Center, and in the run-up, WaPo is profiling each of its stars. Of course, Bernadette Peters is “first among equals,” writes Peter Marks in his Sunday piece. Today’s Elaine Paige item by Dan Zak is a lot more fun if you read the actress’ quotes in her daaaahhlllllllliiinnnggg accent.
Shake the Streets: The D.C. Docent curates a cool video of local dude Andrew Black—-former Title Tracks member and purveyor of breaks—-drumming a go-go beat in the middle of the “Art in the Streets” exhibit, which contains a drum kit anyone can use. The exhibit, at the MOCA in L.A., is controversial for reasons involving another D.C. native—-the show’s associate curator, street-art historian Roger Gastman, has been criticized for having a commercial interest in the culture he studies, because he also runs a marketing firm and sells his expertise to advertisers. Gastman‘s documentary of Cool ‘Disco’ Dan, as far as I know, is still in-progress.
Guantanamo Days: Local art blogger Lenny Campello is writing another book: This one’s a memoir, it seems, and he’s been posting chapters on his site. Today’s episode is another from his childhood in Cuba, and he teaches us how to eat a mango.
Today on Arts Desk: Authorizaation’ final album; Grazia Toderi’s video art at the Hirshhorn.
