House music, avant-garde art, and a hope for clear skies will provide the backdrop for dance fanatics and families alike at the debut 1st Sunday Sessions event at Yards Park this weekend. Headliner DJ Meistro (Marc Meisnere) says, “we want to create an opportunity for families with young kids, who probably are not hitting the club every weekend anymore, to come out and dance together with their little ones.”
Sunday’s headliners include Meistro’s Sol Power All-Stars, house DJ Sam “The Man” Burns, rising electro spinner vANNIEty Kills, the ever-popular Fatback team, and the funky Latin-themed Empresarios Sound System with Javier Miranda, Sammy K, and Sonny Cheeba.
This isn’t the first time that Yards Park has hosted a massive dance party. The five-day electronic music event Forward Festival hosted its closing party on the waterfront property in April. Festival organizer EightyEight D.C. is also a co-promoter of the Sunday series. Graham Jackson, EightyEight’s Creative Director, says the group will co-host two other Sunday Sessions on July 10 and August 7. “We’re definitely trying to grow with the venue,” he says, “and see a lot of positives in the future.”
Outside: 1st Sunday Sessions takes place Sunday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at Yards Park, 10 Water St. SE. Free.
