From July 8 to July 10, C.L.I.T. Fest 2011—-the acronym stands for “combating latent inequality together”—-will be rocking both St. Stephens Church and the Black Cat. The fem-friendly festival has been going on in cities around the country since the first one was held in Minneapolis in 2004. This will be its first time in D.C. after iterations in Richmond, Portland, L.A., and Chicago. The event is about encouraging female participation in DIY culture and sparking conversations about gender through both workshops and punk rock.
The workshops include everything from zine-making to weightier discussions of race and privilege in youth culture. The closing-night show goes down at the Black Cat and includes a film screening, but the line-up for Friday’s show at St. Stephens might be the most promising; it features ’90s-style indie rockers Fell Types alongside mathy, screamo two-piece Trophy Wife, among others. July 9 at 6 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church: Tit Fit, Teen Wolves, Hot Mess, Big Eyes, Foreign Objects, Nuklear Blast Suntant, Condenada, and Shellshag
July 10 at 3 p.m. at Black Cat: Foul Crux, Death First, Emilyn Brodsky, Cat Vet, Appalachian Terror Unit, Zombie Dogs, New Creases, and The Ambulars.
