The Swell Festival Season: Silverdocs, the massive documentary film festival taking place in the shadow of Discovery Channel and the AFI Silver Theatre, starts today. Swing back and read our preview, which contains reviews of more than 50 films, as well as a rundown of the kind of industry business that goes on at the festival each year. Also: Ann Hornaday‘s favorites in WaPo. The opening-night film is The Swell Season. Which I kind of think is garbage.
Fringe Benefits: Tickets to Capital Fringe Festival shows go on sale today. The festival has a strong lineup of free music this year, which includes a bunch of Arts Desk-approved bands like Alma Tropicalia, Elikeh, The Nobis, Lenorable, Janel and Anthony, Insect Factory, Plums, Cornel West Theory, and more. Also, apparently the bar at Fort Fringe will have Prosecco on tap. Our Fringe and Purge blog launches for the season soon.
Laurel Canyon on H Street: All Our Noise films LAKE performing at Red Palace. Gorgeous.
Today on Arts Desk: The Feelies, photographed. D.C. budget’s impact on the arts, examined.
