Capitol Depths: Prince George’s County has shuttered another dance club after a young woman was shot outside the Music and Games Club in Capitol Heights Monday. The shutdown is the first to occur after Prince George’s county council passed the Dance Hall Bill last month, making it easier for police to close nightclubs in the event of violence. (The ordinance also lets cops close clubs for zoning or permit violations.) NBC Washington reports that the MSG Club was a double whammy: It didn’t have a dance hall permit and 20-year-old Jasmine Jerona Banks was shot in a drive-by shooting outside the venue early this week. She died Tuesday of her injuries. A 19-year old man was also injured. The incident is the latest in a long and devastating series of nightclub killings in the county.
Victory Lap: Bethesda’s best known post-rock band Trans Am has announced an album nostalgia tour for its 1999 album Futureworld. The band will play the record in its entirety at the 9:30 Club October 7. Thrill Jockey is also reissuing the album on vinyl with a planned September 13 release date; the reissue will come with a couple digital bonus tracks, including an outtake from the band’s album recording session with James Murphy.
Once a Nerd, Always a Nerd: Yesterday the Smithsonian turned 165. DCist rolled out a nice photo gallery in its honor. The Smithsonian, meanwhile, celebrated modestly, releasing a photo of bison that used to graze on the National Mall and blogging a list called the “Five Weirdest Worms at the Smithsonian.” The Smithsonian might be 165 years old, but in some ways, it’s still a 13-year-old geek.
