Oh, it’s God, that’s what it is. You might be tempted to argue that in the video for “A Letter From the Chief Musician,” Ryan Lucas is too sly about revealing his religiousness, but that would be unfair. The D.C. rapper is merely easygoing about workin’ it in; your favorite MC probably does the same thing with Five Percenter talking points. So what do we really have here? Lucas is one-third of Subwoofer Science (those are the other dudes in the video), he makes his own beats, and he says he “gives voice to the next generation of the Black church and the African diaspora.” And the flow? Surely it’s not weird to suggest there’s a whiff of Doom in his delivery. (Stronger examples can be found elsewhere on Lucas’ debut solo album.)
