More Than Styrofoam Cups and Cheese Cubes: WaPo‘s Weekend section surveys the semi-recent crop of gallery spaces that, um, do other stuff, too. Lavanya Ramanathan and Stephanie Merry write, “In the case of new art spaces around town, a gallery might also be a concert hall and clothing store, a pulsing dance floor or peaceful bookshop. Taking a recession-era tip from portfolio managers, the theme seems to be: diversify.” Included therein: Montserrat House, The Dunes, Pleasant Plains Workshop, and Lamont Bishop Gallery.

Art District: The District’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities added works by 32 local artists to its Art Bank Collection, which will display the art in public spaces in city agencies. The total acquisition’s budget for this year was $150,000. The lucky artists include Joseph Barbaccia, Joan Belmar, Billy Colbert, Cynthia Connolly, Ryan Hoover, Katherine Mann, Bruce McNeil, and a ton more.

Revolving Door: Dafna Steinberg is no longer the gallery director at the Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery at the Jewish Community Center, “due to a change in the direction the DCJCC is taking with the gallery,” she writes in an email. Theatre Washington added some more folks to its board of directors, including Adventure Theatre Producing Artistic Director Michael J. Bobbit and Forum Theatre Artistic Director Michael Dove.
