In late October, shortly after D.C. soul singer Reese Palmer passed away, plans were tentatively made to have a number of local vocalists later honor him with “A Celebration of Life.” That event takes place today at Canterbury Hall in Forrestville, Maryland. A who’s who of veteran D.C. soul artists will be there to honor, with song and reflection, the late vocalist who had founded The Marquees and also performed with The Legendary Orioles.

Film producer Beverly Lindsay-Johnson, who helped organize an earlier benefit show for Palmer, write that at the event, the organizers will also announce plans to make “a scholarship donation to Cardozo High School under the name of Reese Palmer to a graduating student who is involved in music at the school and going to college.” She says they hope to make this scholarship donation an annual custom.

The performers at today’s event include The Jewels, The Velons, The Orioles, The Spaniels, Commitment, Herb Fame (of Peaches of Herb), HALO, Royal Height, and Skip Mahoney & The Casuals. The tribute ends at 5 p.m. at Epiphany Episcopal Church’s Canterbury Hall, 3125 Ritchie Road, Forrestville, Md. (301) 839-2233.
