This is intriguing. The PostClassical Ensemble, a hometown chamber orchestra that’s set on defying musical conventions, will be performing at Georgetown University this weekend together with the New York-based Peridance Contemporary Dance Company and noted Spanish flamenco singer Esperanza Fernandez.
It’s hard to figure out the unifying element in this concert, but it does sound interesting. PostClassical will be performing two pieces: “El Amor Brujo,” by Manuel de Falla, together with Fernandez; and Igor Stravinsky’s “A Soldier’s Tale.” Both pieces will be fully staged, which means the musicians will share the stage with dancers and others. In the first piece, eight members of Peridance will be performing a contemporary ballet in accompaniment, while the Stravinsky piece will feature a single dancer and several actors from Georgetown’s Department of Performing Arts.
Georgetown has been beefing up its performing arts program in recent years, but this is one of the first times they’ve brought in a well-known dance company from out of town. Peridance and its Israeli-born founder, Igal Perry, have been performing in New York since the 1980s and tend toward a ballet-infused style of modern dance.
And the PostClassical Ensemble, in turn, has gotten strong reviews this fall for a couple of concerts dedicated to the music of Charles Ives and George Gershwin—at Strathmore and Bohemian Caverns, respectively.
“My company has been involved in previous projects with the PostClassical Ensemble,” explained Igal Perry. “I know the director and the conductor very well, so it was natural for them to approach me. Last summer, we were the dancers who participated with them at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, so this time they turned to me to do the choreography.”
The Falla/Stravinsky double bill is Saturday at 2pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm, in Georgetown University’s Davis Performing Arts Center. $25 for the public, $5 for students.
