Y(Ike)s: Philip Kennicott is on Team Gehry. In a lengthy and worthwhile review, the Post‘s art/architecture/culture critic praises Frank Gehry‘s paradigm-smashing design for a memorial to Dwight D. Eisenhower on the National Mall. With its large metal tapestries and depiction of the 34th president as the “barefoot boy” of his Kansas youth—-in addition to bas reliefs showing Eisenhower’s success in the military and atop the executive branch—-the design has “re-gendered” the vocabulary of memorializing, Kennicott writes. Which, it turns out, is something about which Eisenhower’s grandchildren aren’t too pleased. After Katherine Boyle wrote her Post story about those tensions, one of Ike’s descendants, his grandson David Eisenhower, resigned from the federal commission responsible for the memorial.
