This morning, the Going Out Gurus gave us a glimpse of the Howard Theatre’s entertainment schedule thus far. The lineup is star-studded—-almost guaranteed to pack the house every night. My only quibble? Most of these performers have played the D.C. area in the last six months.
Wanda Sykes will play three nights at the venue, April 13-15. Great news for anyone who missed her at Strathmore two weeks ago. WaPo reports that The Roots will also play April 15 and again on the 16th. Fantastic! But weren’t they just here? Esperanza Spalding (shown)—-skedded for May 12—-plays D.C. every year. Chaka Khan performs May 5, a little more than six months after her two sold-out shows at the Birchmere. Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) just played the 9:30 Club this week. And of course, Wale, who helps open the venue on April 9, is a local favorite and an obvious pick.
The two exceptions: Jerry Lee Lewis May 18 and Bad Brains and GZA on April 20. The Bad Brains date appears to be an addition to the iconic punk band’s April tour with The Genius and hardcore band H2O. Unfortunately, H2O probably won’t be playing the Howard Theatre anytime soon. Sorry, bros.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 27.
