Fairly or unfairly, Artomatic gets a lot of flak for its wealth of insipid, wretched painting; year after year, meanwhile, it’s often the artists who ignore the paintbrush that make the experience so enjoyable. Donna McCullough has a series of dresses on the second floor that are absolute knock-outs. Sure, the far-from-ordinary materials she uses might recall Lady Gaga, but her dresses have greater kinship with Lizzy Gardiner’s American Express dress than with overlapping layers of rotting meat. The metal and wire-mesh materials from assorted tins and packaging maintain an elegance despite their steely facade, creating a rich dichotomy of masculine and feminine.
