On the 75th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, the National Portrait Gallery is prepared for her arrival. A one-room exhibition, opening June 29, features a video about the record-setting pilot and 35 objects borrowed from the National Air and Space Museum, Library of Congress, Purdue University, Radcliffe College, and private collections. “I believe the argument could be made that there was no woman who was more photographed in her day,” says Associate Curator of Photographs Frank Goodyear. “I can’t think of any figure from Hollywood or Broadway who attracted the media attention that Earhart had; she was the first female media celebrity.” Rather than focus on images of flight, Goodyear chose to highlight Earhart’s impact on the women’s movement of the late 1920s and early 1930s. “It’s her desire to lead and break barriers that makes her the face of her age,” Goodyear says. “One of the things that’s so remarkable about Amelia Earhart is her life continues to resonate today.” “One Life: Amelia Earhart” is on view 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through May 27, 2013 at the National Portrait Gallery, 8th and F streets NW.
