While most of the online music community seemed to be freaking out over Frank Ocean last night, a new track from D.C. comer Fat Trel also came to light. “Where We Go,” first described as a leak and then a single by Trel on Twitter, appears to be from his upcoming album Respekt, which is due out sometime next year. Less rough-edged than a lot of the material on recent mixtape Nightmare on E Street, the song was produced by Taylor Gang‘s Sledgren, known for helping craft Wiz Khalifa‘s humid stoner aesthetic. This makes for a nice contrast, with Trel’s rough bark playing nicely off the pillowy, depth-charge bass. Not much new lyrically from Trel, with most of the bars centering on a familiar money-sex-drugs trifecta, but he sounds hungry and focused, which bodes well for his still-in-question commercial prospects.
