Reload those staplers and commandeer your boss’ Xerox machine—-it’s time for D.C. Zinefest.
The second annual DIY expo, put on by the D.C. Zinefest Collective, hits St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and this year, more than 35 zinesters, cartoonists, distributors, and independent publishers are signed up to participate. Admission is free, but organizers will collect donations for two local charities: adult-education organization Living Wages of Washington, and Our Place D.C., which provides support to incarcerated women.
Shira Pilarski, one of this year’s organizers, shares a few particular tables she’s excited to check out: “I really love [this zinester named] Kerri, who does a zine called Deafula about her own personal experiences with hearing loss. Also Artnoose, who does a zine called Ker-bloom!, which is all letterpresses and has been coming out every other month since 1996.”
Zinefest is a fine entryway into the art of zinemaking, which is, yes, still booming. There are no formal readings scheduled this year, but interactivity is not off the table: Check out the paper doll-making station and the “Splotch Monsters” workshop, which involves making creatures out of ink splotches. (Because who doesn’t need to let out their inner kindergartener now and again?) All day, attendees can craft their hearts out in the craft corner and make-your-own-zine station in the chapel.
For some zine lovers, though, the real highlight of the festival is catching up with the writers they’ve long read on the page. Says Pilarski, “[Artnoose] had a baby this year who she’ll be bringing to Zinefest, and I can’t wait to meet him.”
D.C. Zinefest begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, 1525 Newton St. NW. Free.
