Virginia producer Soulful! is relatively young, but his musical tastes are mature: Last year’s Mumbo Sauce and Drumbreaks sampled extensively from ’70s blaxploitation flicks and dusty grooves.

Elsewhere, his compositions are heavy on nostalgic boom bap. His instrumental for Lyriciss‘ “Get It and Go“—-flutes, guitar chops, driving percussion—-was as lively as the MC.

Released Tuesday, “Summertime Stroll” sees Soulful! team up with D.C. rapper Doe Cigapom. It’s the head-nodding first single from their collaborative EP, Caged Birds, scheduled for a fall release. Here, Cigapom takes listeners on an auditory walk through the city; Soulful!’s percussive instrumental is reminiscent of old-school funk.

All told, “Summertime Stroll” hits the mark as a breezy biography of Chocolate City—-or what’s left of it.
