Kool A.D. (a.k.a. Victor Vasquez) is front and center in Das Racist, a clique of hipster-ass, hyper self-aware rappers that gets off on mining Brooklyn Vegan blog posts, academic white papers, and childhood pop. Within the world of “smart rappers,” A.D. finds a balance between comically self-serious Def Jux priests and letterman jacket-donning clowns. MORE >> (Ramon Ramirez)

Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria will be tapping a keg of its limited edition Derecho Common beer today at 3 p.m. The beer is actually the result of an accident. The brewery lost power during the derecho storm in July, and feared it would lose 13,000 gallons of beer. It turned out the five of its six tanks were just fine. But the sixth fermented at a higher temperature than intended. Port City took inspiration from a “steam beer” style developed in San Francisco that is brewed at higher temperatures, and decided to turn the batch into Derecho Common. Stop by the brewery anytime from 3-9 p.m. today for a pint or to pick up a growler to go. It will also be available at about 50 bars and restaurants around town as soon as next Tuesday. John Mulaney is possibly the driest comic working today. He’s also one of the best. His sardonic wit and whip-smart routine launched him to fame earlier this year after his hour-long special New in Town hit Comedy Central. But Saturday Night Live fans may better recognize him as the co-creator of Stefon, an absurd club kid with a love of mashups. MORE >> (Chris Heller)
