If a Beautiful Swimmers track doesn’t make you knowingly chuckle at least once, then you might not be paying attention. There’s the joyful dance-floor laugh, like, “This track is nicely ’80s damaged and I am maxing to its 4/4 beat,” and then there’s the gratified music-nerd laugh, like, “This track is constructed by dudes who couldn’t resist putting shit in there that is primarily for their own entertainment.” On this preview for the D.C. duo’s forthcoming 12-inch, “New Balance,” my chuckle comes at like 1:39, when the song’s disembodied male voice says “chill.” You don’t put the word “chill” in a song unless you’ve got control of your aesthetic.
