When The Five One broke up last year, its members didn’t seem sure where the chips would fall. The Reston, Va., quartet had recently finished its RED BLUE GREEN GOLD LP, and had big plans for its release and promotion. Those plans went nowhere.
Since then, Blue has gone solo and his debut mixtape, I Can Do It, dropped last week. The remaining Five One members—-Red, Gold, and Green—-plan to release their debut EP on Feb. 12. Today, they debuted “Million Fans,” a hard-charging procession of restive guitar chords, organ stabs, and neck-breaking drums. Traces of The Five One’s sound remain, but for the most part, this is edgier stuff: infectious hip-hop with a rock undercurrent. What’s up now.
