Shakespeare Theatre Company Artistic Director Michael Kahn just got a few fancy letters to tack onto his name: Yesterday, Kahn was inducted as an Honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Officially, he’s Mr. Michael Kahn CBE now.
Honorary Commander is a rank shy of Knight Commander, and Kahn was born in Brooklyn, so we won’t be calling him Sir Michael Kahn anytime soon.
Kahn’s work with Shakespeare’s plays made him eligible for the honor, which he received in a ceremony at the British Ambassador’s residence Tuesday. According to a press release sent by Shakespeare Theatre Company, “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire recognizes distinguished service to the arts and sciences, public services outside the Civil Service and work with charitable and welfare organizations of all kinds.”
