The Airborne Toxic Event closed its old-out two-night stay at the 9:30 Club last night with the bombastic style the band is known for: Lead singer Mikel Jollett crawled up and scaled the stage-right balcony rail as he sang; violinist Anna Bulbrook crowd-surfed; rock poses were struck; Jollett’s songs, full of smart wordplay that tends to focus on love/loss/etc., were delivered at an ungodly volume. The band, on tour supporting its third LP Such Hot Blood, pulled together a set list that reached into its back catalog—-and indulged in a medley that transformed “Missy” into Bruce Springsteen‘s “I’m on Fire,” then a sliver of “I Fought the Law,” then Johnny Cash‘s “Folsom Prison Blues,” and back into “Missy.”

I’ve seen Airborne perform numerous times since I first saw the ensemble play a little courtyard at SXSW 2008. One thing has stayed constant with them: their desire to play an arena-worthy show that still connects with the audience. Love ’em or hate ’em, that’s one thing for which they should be applauded.
