The Rockstar Mayhem Festival is designed to allow maximum intake of heavy music, ranging from tech metal to hard rock to metalcore to pure schlock. Yesterday, the main stage—-Jiffy Lube Live’s enormous amphitheater—-hosted four relatively big-name bands in the evening: Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Mastodon, and Amon Amarth.

Earlier in the day, 11 lesser-known—-and in many cases, frankly more interesting—-bands played nonstop, alternating continuously between two side-by-side festival stages. The main stage events didn’t start until the festival stages had wrapped up, making it possible to see all 15 bands without having to dash madly around the venue. (There was, however, also a fourth stage with local bands and smaller acts, and it was impossible to catch any of this stuff without missing something else.)
