City Paper is not for tourists
The 2013 Virgin Mobile FreeFest lineup has been announced, and Robin Thicke is on it, because America’s all, “‘Blurred Lines’ is kinda rapey but I’m doing my little shoulder-shrug dance to it anyway.”
The nonchalantly goateed R&B singer is one of a few big names on this year’s FreeFest, which takes place Sept. 21 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Among the other big gets are Vampire Weekend, who incidentally delivered an irksome and thoroughly ironic cover of Thicke’s creepy hit single (I smell a live collabo), and MGMT, who to my knowledge have nothing to do with Robin Thicke, but probably do occasionally hang out with topless models.
Overall, this year’s FreeFest goes heavy on electropop and synthesized music, and not just in the dance forest: CHVRCHES, Icona Pop, Sky Ferreira, Pretty Lights, Kaskade, and The Knocks all play the main stages. Dwelling in the forest are Madeon, Washed Out, Ghost Beach, Gareth Emery, Manufactured Superstars, Congorock, and TJR. People still interested in guitars will appreciate the inclusion of City and Colour,The Avett Brothers, Black Joe Lewis, and Little Green Cars. But no ZZ Top this year. Sorry, dad.
Tickets for FreeFest will be available Aug. 9 at noon at ticketfly.com. Virgin Mobile customers, prior FreeFest ticket buyers, and followers of Virgin Mobile on Facebook and Twitter will be alerted to a presale on Aug. 8 at noon. Tickets of course cost nothing (except service fees where they apply), so no need to lose your shirt over it. Ha. Ha. Ha. #thicke.
