Early this week, Fat Trel dropped a video for “Niggaz Dying,” the most recent dribble from his forthcoming SDMG mixtape. Produced by J Gramm, the somber track finds Trel reflecting on the ills of street life: lost lives, friends selling each other out, and the nonstop cycle of violence. He keeps it dark and to-the-point: “Niggas doing life, snitches doing months/Free Lil Durk, this ain’t what you want”—-the last bar being a reference to the Chicago rapper’s legal troubles and his intense anthem “Dis Ain’t What U Want.”
The video is rife with funereal images (a cemetery, dead bodies stretched out on the concrete) and Trel alone in a room, Scarface style. As he exits a house, he’s met by the grim reaper, who flashes across the screen as a heartbeat slows down in the background and everything fades to black.
SDMG drops Aug. 19, but Trel’s followers seem even more pumped about his rumored Maybach Music Group and Roc Nation partnership. Who knows—-maybe Trel will speak to that at his SDMG release show at the Howard Theatre Sept. 10.
