In 2011, Oddisee struck gold with Rock Creek Park, a mostly instrumental, samples-based album that derived its moods and themes from D.C. geography. Though the Largo native spent years as a hip-hop producer and MC, Rock Creek Park passed muster with old-school R&B fans and rap heads alike.

Don’t expect more of the same from Oddisee’s latest material, though. The producer’s new song “Lonely Planet,” released today, sounds more electronic and less nostalgic than the stuff on Rock Creek Park. The AM radio vibe is still there, yes, but those laserlike synths darting around over the wafting guitars and buttery bass line set a different tone.

Oddisee’s forthcoming instrumental album, The Beauty In All, comes out Oct. 1 on Mello Music Group. Listen to “Lonely Planet” below.
