Awthentik doesn’t believe in true monogamy. “Oh that’s your long lost love, that’s your girlfriend?” he asks on “Cash 4 Gold,” the edgy opener of his new album Silence Is Golden, Ignorance Is Platinum. “I’ll be the last nigga she fuckin’ when the world end.”
Clearly, he’s working with a theme. On the second song, “God Pray For Us,” he raps: “Your bride on the side fuckin’ yo’ best man.” Then on the Kev Brown-produced “Blowin’ Mary Jane”: “Your girl callin’ Awthentik for a fuckin’ buddy/I’m in a tub wit ya lady like a rubber ducky.”
Straight-to-the-point rhymes are typical of Awthentik, a raw lyricist, producer, and engineer from Silver Spring. On last year’s Beef and Broccoli, he and frequent collaborator Ethan Spalding merged their disparate styles onto one set, resulting in a solid collection of Southern crunk and East Coast boom-bap. On Silence is Golden, Awthentik remains direct, whether he’s shouting out DMV rappers (“I’ve Been Tryin'”) or warning against the perils of success (“Big Chains”). On “Fxck it Up,” Awthentik uses a sumptuous bounce beat to chastise rappers who aren’t so, er, authentic: “Why you corny bubble gum and slummin’ on that pop shit/Just hoping that you pop quick.”
