Standout Track: No. 7, “The One,” a sultry-paced slow jam from Wes Felton’s recent album, Imagine the Future. On this track, the Deanwood native, who also goes by W. Ellington Felton, channels Aaliyah in an ode to his soul mate (“Your love is a one in a million,” Felton sings. “…it goes on and on and on and on”). She’s a woman who had her pick, to hear Felton tell it. “You can have another million others calling/Or another million other brothers stalking,” he sings. “Catch another million eyes when we’re walking/But I’m the one, I’m the one, I’m the one, I’m the one.”
Musical Motivation: “The One,” produced by D.C. expat Kenny Allen, was recorded after Felton, 37, met his current companion and fell hard. “Rather than me bragging, I wanted to offer a realistic perspective,” Felton says. “I wanted to remind her that, when it’s all said and done, I’m the one she chose.”
Style Sharing: Imagine the Future, Felton’s first new album in 10 years, is the singer’s reintroduction. He says he wanted to create something accessible and artistic at the same time. “I wanted to show that you can make a mainstream record that fits within all genres,” Felton says. “I make music for adults and mature human beings. I wanted to show that it’s possible to be an artist and maintain your integrity. Imagine the Future is a mantra; it’s about imagining the future that you want.”
Wes Felton performs at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. tonight at Big Bear Café. Listen to “The One” after the jump.
