It’s hard to top the The Hives‘ live show, but when you’ve got killer songs, theatrics aren’t always necessary. And during its opening slot for the Swedish band at 9:30 Club last night, D.C.’s own Ex Hex showed it had killer songs indeed. The band, featuring Mary Timony, Betsy Wright, and Laura Harris, played its first show in October, but its tight sound belies its youth. With Johnny Thunders undertones (the band even does a killer cover of “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory”), leather-whip hooks, and lipstick melodies, Ex Hex is vicious in the most delightful of ways.
