Maryland financial advisor-turned-rapper Dunson returns with the remix to “Cross Town Lovers,” scoring a huge assist from John Legend. If you’re curious about how the rapper landed a feature from the Grammy winner, there’s a story:
This record was inspired by a hook that John had done a couple years ago but didn’t use. He was generous enough to let me take a swipe at it around a time in my life where a couple of very relevant situations had presented themselves.
Phatboiz and I recorded the original version for my last mixtape, The Investment but we never pushed it because we felt it had better sonic potential. Once we finally revisited it in L.A. last month, we felt we did the story and the song justice. What better time to release it than now?
The song tells the messy tale of infidelity, one-night stands, and the emotional damage that it all causes.
Everyone’s had that relationship/side piece dilemma within an uncomfortably close proximity. That’s what this song is about. #CTLrmx

Don’t be fooled by the radio-friendly production and upbeat inflection in Dunson’s voice—-this is a cautionary tale, with the rapper and Legend warning women to keep their distance. On the song’s final verse, Dunson’s lothario lifestyle finally catches up to him: “She at the show and she used to me by favorite fan/Now saying goodbye is the only way she’ll wave her hands.” You can’t run from karma. Dunson’s next project, Outlier, is due out this spring.
