While the world continues to wait for somebody to use Uriah Heep‘s “The Wizard” as the soundtrack for a highlight reel of slow-mo, super-high-def Marcin Gortat dunks, fans of the resurgent Washington Wizards basketball franchise can behold at least two peppy hometown tunes with videos that feature recycled footage of point guard John Wall: “Im Gettin It” by Styme (pronounced STY-mee), and “John Wall” by Choppa Black featuring Tatted One.
Styme’s song is mostly boilerplate sports hype (“If you wanna win/Then you must play D”), while the Choppa Black track—-not to be confused with this moldy oldie—-is an extended, came-up-from-the-bottom metaphor (“D.C. prince, hell yeah I got hated on/Now my feet up in my condo as I get waited on”) that includes what seems to be a Nae Nae/Nenê pun.
Both brim with hope; that’s what happens when your NBA team is in the playoffs for the first time since 2008. (Note: It’s not a particularly strong subgenre. And to have one of those “Kobe, tell me how my ass tastes” moments, you need to win a championship, really.) The ‘Zards, incidentally, are ahead of the Chicago Bulls 2-0 in their first-round series; the third game is Friday at the Verizon Center here in D.C.
