RDGLDGRN’s music is made for warm weather, which might be why the Reston, Va., trio spends most of its time playing outdoor festivals during the summer months. Among the shows on its upcoming schedule is this year’s Summer Spirit Festival in Columbia, Md., alongside Lauryn Hill, Janelle Monae, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Raheem DeVaughn.

And if it wasn’t obvious that RDGLDGRN (pronounced Red, Gold, Green) was from the region, look no further than its recent work. Beginning with last year’s “I Love Lamp,” with Foo Fighter Dave Grohl on drums, the group has used sporadic go-go breakdowns to pepper its gusty island sound. The same goes for “Robots,” which RDGLDGRN released today. Over Grohl’s tumbling percussion and Red‘s sunny guitar riff, Green talks about the perils of interracial dating: “Mama said ‘please don’t go, don’t you bring that boy in my home’/There ain’t no reason you to be seeing anybody dark as coal.'”

By the third verse, Green sounds exasperated with this imagined tale. “Why we actin’ like there’s something that’s missing/Is it ’cause the way that we are conditioned? I’m thinking so.” The song ends on a somber note: After a long day, the girl’s father comes home and finds her in a bedroom with the boyfriend. The dad kills the boy. Damn.
