Headlined by Detroit’s resident A$$ shaker Big Sean (pictured) and trap-and-bass meme phenomenon Baauer (of Harlem Shake fame), this year’s Trillectro lineup could possibly cause a small earthquake around its new venue, RFK Fairgrounds, on August 23.
Hip-hop trio of the moment Migos, whose 2013 single “Versace” easily challenges Big Sean for the most repetitive verse ever, will be providing support. This year’s “most likely to bring a million surprise guests on stage with him” award goes to local molly-rap hero Fat Trel, who’s gotten all kinds of buzz since signing to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group.
More conscious-flavored homegrown hip-hop can be found when Oddisee hits the stage, and Top Dawg Entertainment’s SZA will slow down the crowd with her soulful vocals set to downtempo beats. Virginia’s Goldlink, a Washington City Paper favorite, will lay down his summer-perfect beats in the heat.
There’s sure to be plenty of art, food, and sneakers (VIP tickets this year came with a set of Reeboks), but the real question of the day will be whether the local festival‘s move to the larger venue from Half Street Fairgrounds will prevent last year’s mess, when some ticket holders were turned away at the door due to capacity issues.
