Seeing Bebel Gilberto live on Sunday night at the 9:30 Club, the same adjective kept coming to my mind: hypnotic. Her voice, her dance moves, even her hair, were all siren-like. Born to Brazilian music icons João Gilberto and singer Miúcha, Gilberto’s music has always been completely innovative, mixing her traditional bossa nova roots with more modern elements of electronica and pop. (It’s no surprise, then, that she counts the members of Thievery Corporation as friends and collaborators. She even dedicated a song to TC’s Eric Hilton as he stood in the balcony at the show.) Gilberto’s first record in five years, Tudo, much of which she played last night, will drop in August.
