Last night, D.C.’s Pree celebrated the release of its first recorded music since 2011’s Folly with a show at the Black Cat backstage. I was only able to stay for the first of two sets, but am happy to report that the songs I didn’t recognize—-presumably from the band’s forthcoming album Rima, to be released in 2015—-certainly don’t lack for the band’s quirky charm. Pree may have narrowed down its instrumentation, moving away from the diverse orchestration of its early music in favor of jangly indie-pop timbres; but look beyond the surface, and there’s still plenty of delightful weirdness to be found.
