There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Last night, the 9:30 Club got the honor of being the first show on the Gaslight Anthem‘s tour for its new release, Get Hurt. “It’s still scary playing new stuff,” said lead singer Brian Fallon, equating it with standing in front of a class naked. The band’s new songs are a little different from its older material, a little darker and incorporating keyboards; purists may claim that it doesn’t “rock” as hard. But the track “Ain’t That a Shame” is a great display of the band’s classic sound and Fallon’s vocal range, and live, Fallon includes some great lilts in his voice that drive it home. Fallon also did a stellar Roger Daltrey when the band wrapped up the show with a scorching version of the Who‘s “Baba O’Riley.”
Against Me! opened with a killer set. Let’s just say that the crowdsurfing score was 4-1, in favor of the band. Laura Jane Grace and the boys have become a finely tuned unit and set the bar high for Gaslight. The two bands touring together should make for some amazing shows.
