There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
“This is dedicated to everyone in this room, and the 9:30 Club, and no one fucking else,” said Johnny Marr before he closed his show with “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” at the 9:30 Club on Sunday. The former Smiths guitarist and songwriter, out supporting his latest solo effort, Playland, still plays a mean guitar, taking that shimmery Smiths sound to a visceral new level.
Getting a little older hasn’t tamed “Johnny Fuckin Marr,” as one of his merch t-shirts read. “Has anyone got any questions?” asked Marr early in the show. When someone yelled out a band name, he replied, “That’s one of those bands with beards and shit. Do you see a stool or a laptop on stage?”
