Yesterday evening, Wale began tweeting about a big announcement that would be made at 3:31 p.m. this afternoon. The D.C. rapper has yet to reveal the release date for his next album, the Seinfeld-inspired The Album About Nothing, so that—-coupled with the fact that March 31 is a Tuesday—-led many to believe he was about to reveal that the project would be out in March. It was a clever case of misdirection.
Instead, Wale and Complex magazine (disclosure: I write for them) released a 76-second clip of him seated in a studio, his mind frantically racing from thought to thought. As he stresses about contemporaries like friend J. Cole and the queen of the over the top, Nicki Minaj, releasing new music while he labors away on his album, DJ A-Trak interrupts with an announcement: “Yo, I got something for you.”
Continuing to ride the Seinfeld theme, Wale and A-Trak will release a collaborative project, Festivus, on the Seinfeld-created holiday of Festivus (Dec. 23). Fans expected one announcement and they got another, the latter of which will hold them over until The Album About Nothing’s release.
But don’t disregard March 31 just yet. There are too many coincidences surrounding that date to ignore.
