Last week, D.C. had Noel Gallagher in town. Last night at the 9:30 club, we got another taste of Britpop history in the form of the Modfather, Paul Weller. Touring behind Saturns Pattern, his first release in three years, Weller still dresses as sharp as ever—name the last rock musician you saw onstage wearing twin-tone wingtip shoes—and still effortlessly wraps his signature voice around notes smoother than satin.
The setlist supported Weller’s recent quip: “I like now. I like today. I don’t want to spend my time trying to recapture something that can’t be recaptured.” It was filled with choice tracks from his 23 years of solo work, and the Jam‘s “Town Called Malice” was the last song. Weller is forever moving forward, always looking for ways to make his Britpop-soul blend sound fresh and new.
