It was a short 45 minutes, but R.Ring‘s headlining set at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue on Saturday was just about perfect. Members Kelley Deal (the Breeders) and Mike Montgomery (Ampline), joined on this tour by drummer Leo DeLuca (Southeast Engine), made these beautifully haunting songs. Some were dreamy and hypnotic, some frantic and almost desperate, but all had lyrics with staying power. Much like the Wrens, R.Ring releases music sporadically; there’s an older EP and some 7-inches, the latest a split with the Quailbones. It’s commendable that the band moves at its own organic pace, but it’s hard not to wish for more of R.Ring’s signature sound.
