Some of us know love when we see it—or, at the very least, we’ve identified the model for what we’re attracted to. D.C. singer and
songwriter Kevin Ross recently tried his hand at Andre 3000’s timeless love song, “Prototype,” and the results are impressive. Where the original is sparse to perfection and quirky in all the ways that’s made Andre (and his Outkast partner, Big Boi) a legend, Ross takes a more traditional R&B approach, putting his own stamp on the song in the process.
The Motown signee released his debut EP, Dialogue in the Grey, in 2014, and this cover should hold fans over as he works on new music. It’s not the original—and it’s not supposed to be: It’s Ross’ interpretation of a classic submerged is his style.
